Hi Flames coaches,
As you may or not be aware the representative basketball program in Victoria (VJBL) has a No Zone Policy for all age groups up to and including under 14’s
Basketball Victoria is hosting a series of No Zone Clinics for the 2018/19 season and this is open to domestic coaches to attend. This session is free of charge
This is a fantastic opportunity for all our Flames coaches to attend one of the sessions and gain a better understanding of why Basketball Victoria has introduced this policy and ways to implement it as part of your coaching. This is also open to any new coaches who will be coaching in 2019.
As a club our preference is that we do not play zone defence for our age groups u8 – u14’s
I am aware some of you may have strong or differing opinions on this, but we would like to fall into line with the governing body that we play under.
Zone defence most definitely still has a place in the game of basketball and we as coaches and our players need to understand it and also how to play against it.
Our main responsibility to our players is to develop them in all facets of the game of basketball.
We appreciate that all coaches at Flames are volunteers and giving up their valuable time to help and develop the kids, hence why these sessions present a great opportunity to upskill yourself.
Thanks and if you have any questions pls feel free to reach out to me.

As part of our ongoing commitment to increasing basketball standards throughout Victorian junior basketball, the Melbourne Utd. Victorian Junior Basketball League (MUVJBL) will host its next series of No Zone Clinics.
Players will have plenty of time to learn about zones and advanced defensive tactics as they advance through the age groups, but for MUVJBL under-12 and under-14 competitions, the league wants them to learn the basics first.
With this in mind, the MUVJBL will continue its No Zone Clinics with new dates scheduled around Metropolitan Melbourne over the next few months.
These are mandatory clinics for all new under-12 and under-14 coaches entering the MUVJBL and is a requirement for all coaches, assistant coaches and No Zone Delegates.
All new under-12 and under-14 coaches, assistant coaches, newly appointed No Zone Delegates and new Directors of Coaching (DOC) for 2018/19 season must attend at least one No Zone Clinic. The clinics are also opened to domestic coaches.
There are no exemptions. Coaches that do not attend a clinic will not be permitted to coach under-12s or under-14s in the 2018/19 season.
